2013 Honda Accord arrives, and the crowd goes mild: Motoramic Drives

2013 Honda Accord arrives, and the crowd goes mild: Motoramic Drives
"The Honda Accord is the greatest car in the world," the guy with the inexplicable mini-Mohawk, a lead designer for the company, was saying. "It is, absolutely, without question."
He said this live-miked while sitting in a brand-new 2013 model on the patio of a resort in Santa Barbara. Two-dozen car reviewers circled around him like buzzards, waiting for him to utter something else outrageous and uncomfortable. His Honda co-workers gritted their teeth, muttering shutupshutupshutup under their breath. This was the definition of an oversell. At some point, the guy realized he'd stepped outside the bounds of conventional car hype, saying, "What I meant is that the Accord does its job better than any car in the world." But the statement had already been released into the wild, ready to be judged.
Shockingly, the Honda Accord is not the greatest car in the world. It never has been, not even close, and, barring some catastrophic event where dozens of contemporary models are suddenly wiped away from history and memory, it never will be. The 2013 update of the Accord will be available in many flavors, with a 4-cylinder engine or a 6-cylinder one, as an automatic 4-door, a manual coupe, or a CVT, and even, starting early next year, as a plug-in hybrid. It boasts a tighter rear and slightly sleeker lines than previous models. But no matter the iteration, the Accord will be what it has been for more than 30 years, a reliable, safe, reasonably comfortable, moderately priced family sedan running between $23,000 and $33,000. Few will be amazed and even fewer will be offended.
On a beautiful day in mid-August, I drove several different versions of the new Accord. The first one my partner and I got was a 278-hp V-6 with all the trimmings. Family sedans don't tend to be that fun to drive, and this new Accord wasn't much of an exception. The front end felt a little sluggish, it didn't corner brilliantly, nor did it accelerate with a ton of gusto. Everything seemed a bit heavy, including the brakes. The transmission, when we put it into Sport mode, whined and churned when it was switching gears. It was fine. The Accord never really claimed to be a driver's car.
2013 Honda Accord arrives, and the crowd goes mild: Motoramic Drives
But it also had great leg room and fantastic visibility. Compared with other cars of its class, where window height sometimes feels like an afterthought, the Accord seemed to boast a 360-degree panorama, lacking only a glass floor, a perk which no car maker has yet figured out how to safely install. The Accord had other strengths, too. Side cameras, which can be turned on and off, worked extremely well, greatly mitigating the dangers of the blind spot. The rest of the electronic safety-warning apparatus was also efficient, smart, and not annoying.
The version we had was fully appointed, with breathable leather seats and a bit of faux-wood panelling, a higher-end version of the Accord than most people will buy, more like an entry-level Lexus, Infiniti, or, dare I say it, an Acura. At the very least, it almost exactly resembled a high-end Toyota Camry. That's one of the problems with the Accord, though, or maybe with all mid-range cars these days: They're mostly alike.
At one point in our drive, we got stuck on a country road, where we were winding toward a winery to be fed like pigs at the trough. A car crawled along in front of us. I wondered why the test-driver was going so slowly; even when they're running a quotidian Accord through its paces, car writers try to drive like the Sennas they imagine themselves to be. But as we got closer, I saw that it was actually a Hyundai Elantra, not being test-driven at all. At other points in the day, I mistook a Taurus, an Impala, and even an older Accord for the new one. Such are the perils of a crowded category.
After lunch, I got into a 4-cylinder Accord with a CVT. This one had cloth seats with bland gray material that looked like something you'd find at an assisted-living home, no automatic seat adjustments, none of the bells and whistles of the earlier version, and about 30 percent less power to boot. It drove as you might expect. Eh. But it was still roomy, still air-tight safe, and still had the same excellent wraparound view. It also will cost less, and should easily meet the expectations of the thousands of faithful Accord customers that Honda has carefully cultivated over the decades.
2013 Honda Accord arrives, and the crowd goes mild: Motoramic Drives
On fuel economy, Honda has followed the crowd; the most-efficient 4-cylinder gets a 29 mpg combined and 35 mpg on the highway; the 6-cylinder matches the 25 mpg combined posted by the 2013 Nissan Altima. Honda hasn't released details on its hybrid version, which never sold well in its previous edition, and won't go on sale until next summer.
Later, I also drove a preview version of the Accord plug-in hybrid, arriving in about six months. Like the Prius plug-in, it has an all-electric range of 12-15 miles, and like all electric cars, it boasts a zippier, cleaner-feeling drive than a combustion-driven engine does. With the Fit EV, Honda has proven it can do electric as well as any manufacturer, and the Accord plug-in should be a nice arrow to add to Honda's growing alternative-fuels quiver.
It's been a rougher-than-usual period for Honda. The Japan earthquake and tsunami devastated production and development. The most recent Civic, its other flagship car, has decent sales numbers, but has been savaged by critics. Consumer Reports called it one of "five cars you're buying but probably shouldn't." The company needs the Accord to do well, and it almost certainly will.
The 2013 Accord isn't going to get you laid. No one's going to write songs about its excellent safety features and visibility. But those are precisely the qualities that will allow it to continue to vie for the top spot in the car industry's most hotly contested segment. It's not the greatest car in the world, but it's among the most competent and reliable. Absolutely, and without question.

Porsche 918 Spyder clocks a time of 7:14 on the ‘Ring

Porsche 918 Spyder clocks a time of 7:14 on the ‘Ring
Porsche has announced an official Nürburgring lap time of 7 minutes, 14 seconds for the 918 Spyder following a series of official tests with prototypes of the advanced gasoline-electric hybrid supercar at the famed German circuit this week.
Although Porsche isn’t prepared to confirm who was driving the early version of the 918 Spyder at the time, it does say the lap time was achieved with a prototype boasting what it describes as an optional Weissach package that provides a series of yet-to-be revealed handling tweaks and on standard Michelin road tires.
“With a time of 7:14, the 918 Spyder has confirmed the potential of its future-orientated driveline concept after just a few months of testing,” said Frank Walliser, head of the 918 Spyder development.
The official lap time for the 918 Spyder is among the fastest for a road-legal car at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, undercutting by some 18 seconds the fastest time of its predecessor, the Carrera GT, achieved back in 2004.
As well as confirming the 918 Spyder’s testing pace at the Nürburgring, Porsche has also revealed its hybrid driveline puts out 784 hp. Powering the new two-seater is a mid-mounted 4.6-liter V8 gasoline engine loosely based on that used by the Porsche RS Spyder race car and a pair of electric motors mounted within the front-axle assembly.
The 918 Spyder is planned to go into production at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen headquarters on the outskirts of Stuttgart on Sept. 18, 2013.

New Audi S3 packs 296-hp punch

New Audi S3 packs 296-hp punch
Audi has turned up the heat on the S3 as it prepares to take the fight to the likes of the recently introduced BMW M135i and upcoming Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG in what is set to become an intriguing battle for premium-brand hot-hatchback supremacy.
Audi does not sell the current S3 in the U.S. market.
The third-generation model of Audi's all-wheel-drive S3 is pictured here officially for the first time ahead of its public debut next week at the Paris motor show. It is the first in a series of new performance cars from the Volkswagen Group to benefit from an advanced turbocharged 2.0-liter direct-injection gasoline engine developed from scratch as part of Audi's EA888 engine family.
With 296 hp at 5,500 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque between 1,800 and 5,500 rpm, the new four-cylinder engine provides the S3 with unprecedented levels of performance. There is an additional 35 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque compared with the EA113 engine used by the second-generation S3 on sale since 2006.
The power is channeled through either a standard six-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed double clutch S-tronic gearbox. The latter offers steering wheel-mounted shift paddles and an automatic mode for hands-free shifting. Drive is apportioned to all four wheels via a Haldex-style multi-plate clutch.
Audi quotes a 0-to-62-mph time of 5.1 seconds for the new S3 running the S-tronic gearbox, while the manual posts a time of 5.4 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155 mph. Combined city/highway fuel consumption on the European test cycle is put at 34.1 mpg for the manual and 33.6 mpg for the dual-clutch car.

2013 Shelby Super Snake to debut at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction

2013 Shelby Super Snake to debut at Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction
Shelby American is following up its 950- and 1,100-hp anniversary edition Super Snake models with something a little tamer for 2013. Two new versions of the Super Snake are now being offered, one with 662 hp and one with an upgraded supercharger and an output of 850 hp. And, for the first time, a wide-body kit for the pony car will be offered.
The new Shelby GT500 Super Snake—set to debut at the Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas auction Sept. 20-22—starts with a base 2013 Ford Mustang GT500. Shelby American adds a short-throw shifter with an optional 3.73:1 rear-axle ratio, an upgraded suspension and Shelby-designed 20-inch wheels. Underneath, the Snake gains a Borla exhaust system; Wilwood brakes with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers; and a new cooling package, including a new radiator, heat exchanger and aluminum cooling tanks.
A fiberglass hood is installed—with the Shelby Super Snake design—to reduce weight. Super Snake stripes are available in satin black, gloss white, silver or blue. Super Snake badges with a Shelby registry number are added, while the headrests and floor mats are embroidered with the Super Snake logo.
The full wide-body kit costs $17,995; the rear alone costs $11,995. Both include 14-inch-wide wheels and tires. The kit includes front brake cooling ducts behind the door side scoops.
Optional equipment includes the Ford Racing/Whipple supercharger, which bumps output to 850 hp, an Eibach coil-over suspension and sway bar kit, premium Shelby interior and museum delivery.
The base package costs $28,995 for 662 hp. The 850-hp package jumps to $39,995. The post-title packages do not include the price of a GT500 donor car, which currently stickers at $54,995.

Glickenhaus may enter LMP1 class at Le Mans

Glickenhaus may enter LMP1 class at Le Mans
James Glickenhaus, the man who brought you the Ferrari P4/5, is working on a new car to be used in top-level endurance racing such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans, possibly as early as 2014. Recently, sketches of the car—currently called the P4/5 Competizione LMP—have made their way to the Internet.
Glickenhaus made his money in the stock market and film industry, but he became a household name among car guys when he commissioned the one-of-one Ferrari P4/5 Pininfarina. Though Ferrari didn't sanction the build, once they saw the car, they gave the OK for the P4/5 to wear a Ferrari badge.
Later, Glickenhaus developed a Competizione version which was piloted to a 6 minute, 51 second lap around Germany's Nurburgring with help from a kinetic-energy recovery system, or KERS. That's the fastest recorded time for a Ferrari-powered car, though it was wearing race tires, which makes comparing it with any street car an apples and oranges affair.
He will return to the 'ring on Oct. 27 with another evolution of the P4/5, this time with better brakes, new Dunlop tires, better weight balance and a motor bored out from 4.0 to 4.4 liters. The aim is to beat the previous record while competing for the FIA World Championship Alternate Energy Cup.
The new LMP car will not be a Ferrari in any way. After Glickenhaus' Competizione car, he and the Prancing Horse went their separate ways. He is currently looking for some media buzz and an engine manufacturer, and it looks to be going well. Glickenhaus says he already has interest from one manufacturer and is hoping to garner more. He hasn't ruled anything out. Glickenhaus says they could use a diesel powerplant or a smaller turbocharged gas engine. There is also a new technique for recovering wasted turbo energy, which Glickenhaus says is also not out of the question. He's currently working with endurance racing's governing body, the ACO, to understand the rules that he would have to adhere to if he competes.
These are obviously the very early stages of the effort, but if the Internet buzz is any indication, this upcoming year could be an extremely busy one for Glickenhaus et al.

2013 Mazda CX-9 debuts before Australian show

The new 2013 Mazda CX-9 will debut at the Australian Motor Show
Mazda will fully reveal the 2013 CX-9 SUV at the Australian International motor show in October. It appears that Mazda couldn't wait that long, as the company just released a few images of the redesigned people carrier, which now looks like the big brother to the CX-5.
It features the Kodo design language that we've seen at several auto shows, which lends it a sportier look than previous models. Mazda says it upgraded the interior design as well, though pictures weren't provided. Elsewhere in the cabin, the CX-9 uses Mazda's ominously named HMI (human machine interface), which is a voice-recognition system for navigation and entertainment. It will also feature safety systems such as lane-departure warning, forward-obstruction warning and high-beam control.
Like the previous version, the CX-9 will use Mazda's 3.7-liter V6 for power; last year's model made 273 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque.
The 2012 Australian International motor show opens to the press Oct. 18 and to the public the day after

Volvo offers 250 Polestar Limited Edition C30s for U.S

Volvo
Volvo is making 250 Polestar C30s available for American customers.

The 2013 Volvo C30 Polestar Limited Edition will be available in the United States in limited numbers for a sticker price of $32,445, including $895 in destination.
The 2.5-liter five-cylinder engine receives an upgrade of 23 hp and 37 lb-ft of torque, leading to a total output of 250 hp and 273 lb-ft. Volvo
says the power boost comes from increasing airflow into the combustion chambers and advancing spark timing.
This is a welcome improvement to the C30, which just needed a bit of extra oomph to compete with the Mazda MazdaSpeed 3 and Volkswagen GTI.
Volvo also says that the increases don't change the fuel-consumption numbers, which remain at 21 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway when equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. Highway mileage gets a bump when the five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission is installed.
The sport chassis, which is standard on the R-Design, is also standard on the Polestar. When compared to the base C30, stiffness is increased by 30 percent, the dampers are designed to build up pressure quicker and the steering ratio is 10 percent quicker.
The exterior is enhanced with 17-inch Styx alloy wheels with a matte black finish. Polestar badges adorn the rear and sides of the vehicle. All of the special models will wear a coat of Volvo's new rebel blue paint. The Polestar is based on the R-Design model, which gets a body-colored body kit, R-Design logos, watch-dial instrument cluster and a sport steering wheel and pedals.
Each C30 Polestar will have a numbered plaque inside, noting the uniqueness of the ride. Leather seats are standard with a choice of off black or two-tone off black and calcite. It comes with a version of the company's Premium Plus trim level including a power sunroof, power driver's seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, LED running lights, keyless drive and xenon headlights. Customers can add the Platinum trim, which improves the radio, and adds navigation and satellite radio.
Like all Volvos, the special edition comes with traction and stability control, side-impact protection and whiplash protection.
Only 250 C30 Polestar Limited Editions will be offered, and they arrive in November, so if you're interested, call your local Volvo dealer and get on the list.

BMW Introduces Anniversary Edition 760Li

Twenty-five years ago, BMW delivered the first V12 7-series sedan. It used 5.0 liters of displacement to make a whopping 296 hp, which was powerful for its time. Now the marque from Bavaria introduced the 25th anniversary edition of that V12 sedan with more displacement and much more power. Only 15 examples of the model will be produced for the U.S. market. The cars will be delivered early next year. The 2013 BMW 760Li will sport badges reading “V-12 25 Years Edition” and will be offered in a full range of colors. Champagne Merino leather is standard along with black piping. Floor mats, footrests, doorsills and headrests are all uniquely designed as well. Rear-seat entertainment is standard, as are 20-inch wheels, Alcantara trim and piano-black inlays. A 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 making 535 hp and 550 lb-ft is under the hood. That's good for a 0-to-60-mph sprint of 4.5 seconds and a limited top speed of 130 mph without the M Sport Package, 155 mph with the option. Those specs are made more impressive by the sedan's 5,015-pound curb weight. The cost of the special edition is $159,695 including shipping charges. The government adds a $2,100 gas-guzzler tax. The base BMW 760Li starts at $143,195 including shipping charges and gas-guzzler tax. Correction: The first V12 BMW 7-series had a 5.0-liter V12. It was the next generation that came with a 5.4-liter as the story originally read
